ETRACE, MAKRO and GFSI: Setting a Benchmark for Food Suppliers
A partnership between MAKRO Cash & Carry Egypt (MAKRO), the Agriculture and Agro-Industries Technology Center (ETRACE) and the Global Food Safety Initiative aims to implement GFSI regulations in Egypt. Applying the GFSI scheme to suppliers of the food value chain enables them to have access to local as well as export markets. This will create job opportunities, increase income and qualify producers to become suppliers of MAKRO.

The project assessed more than 20 companies for compliance with the regulations and trained 43 quality mangers on the regulations and their practical implementation. The assessment conducted after the training revealed significant improvement in food safety management as well as fertile grounds for further development. The project activities, outcomes as well as ETRACE team’s remarks on implementation were presented at the Global Food Safety Conference in Washington in February 2010
