Withinthe framework of the MAKRO/UNIDO cooperation, a project was designed to train800 growers in 4 locations on modern techniques, including post-harvesttreatments, GLOBALGAP and economics. In addition, technical assistance will bedelivered to 200 suppliers, which will be selected out of the initial 800growers. The project document was approved by MAKRO and other partners who arefinancing the project (IMC and the Dutch Embassy). The MoU is prepared, and thefirst contracts are under preparation. The project, with a total budget of€313,000, is designed for a 3-year period starting in March 2010.

InMay, a sample of farmers was interviewed in order to assess their needs, andtwo initial training sessions were conducted. Suppliershave received intensive training courses and are followed up upon twice a weekfor technical assistance and advice on crop and quality and food safety management guaranteeing continuous quality control. Farmers will receivementoring during harvesting and field packing

The replication of this model will be applied in theSharkeya, Beni Sueif and Isamiliya.
