 Cairo, March 17th, 2010- A memorandum of understanding was signed between Agriculture and Agro-industries Technology Center (ETRACE), MAKRO Egypt and Industrial Modernizations Center IMC, agreeing to launch a EGP 0.3 million project, to upgrade fresh produce suppliers.
The joint project, co-financed by MAKRO, the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and IMC, aims to train 800 farmers, on production techniques, certify 10 lead farmers with GlobalGAP and improve productivity and compliance with international standards of 200 farmers through technical assistance. Beneficiaries of this project include small and medium sized farms, agricultural associations, traders and suppliers of exporters.
MAKRO/ METRO Cash & Carry is one of METRO Group major drivers. METRO Group is considered a pioneer in self-service retail of the world. The Group has generated sales of about EUR 67 billion in 2008, has more than 280 000 employees and more than 2200 stores in 32 countries. François Olivier, managing director of MAKRO Egypt, declared: “We are looking forward to the partnership with IMC and ETRACE to launch this project that shall upgrade farmers enabling them to meet market demand”.
IMC is part of the strategic plan to improve Egypt’s international competiveness, with a strong governmental commitment to provide financial support. Adham Nadim, managing director of IMC stated: “The partnership with MAKRO Egypt on this project corresponds with our vision, mission and goals. We endeavor to accomplish this project, beneficiating farmers, traders, the Egyptian agricultural sector and all Egyptians”.
ETRACE, affiliated to the Ministry of Trade and Industry and founded in cooperation with UNIDO aims to develop and upgrade the agro-industrial supply chain, by providing sustainable and integrated solutions to enhance productivity, increase efficiency, transfer knowledge and technology, build trade capacity, as well as facilitate access to markets, in accordance with quality and environmental requirements. Alaa Fahmy, director of ETRACE commented: “This Agreement reflects the core of our vision and mission as a Center abiding by our key mandates to upgrade the agro-industrial supply chain.”
